Subject: Good show, but Poor Recording
Subject: Good show, but Poor Recording
If I had to guess, I would say that there was a good chance that this 1997 gig from Portugal was recorded by the same taper as the Portugal gig from 1996 was, as the sound is very similar. Unfortunately, that similarity includes the fact that the recording isn't very good. Listenable, but slightly distant, and with cuts here and there.
As for the performance, this show features the band in slightly more talkative mood than they had been thus far on the tour, although not by much as Billy's only word to the crowd is a brief "Obrigado" near the end of the set.
There are some performance errors, including a re-start of the reworked version of XYU. However, what sets this show apart from others before it is that at the end of The Aeroplane Flies High the band get into an extended jam which lasts for a few minutes before Billy leads the group into an impromptu version of Bodies. Although, while this was probably a nice treat for the audience, the results aren't as impressive on the recording. The post-TAFH jam is more of a noise experiment, and the version of Bodies takes a bit to get off the ground and ends up being a straightforward runthrough. Given how the set had been tailored to have gloomier reworkings of MCIS songs alongside the B-sides and Soundtrack Album cuts, hearing Bodies seems slightly out of place, as the song doesn't quite fit for some reason.
Nevertheless, a good show from the tour, but not one to rush to listen to given the quality of the recording. I'd still take Roskilde from 6/28 as the better recording and performance.
